Peanut Butter, Pickles and Mayonnaise

Peanut butter, pickles and mayonnaise for sandwiches or as an appetizer cannot be beat. I think I know what  you are thinking; that I’m crazy or pregnant!  Neither I hope, but in the last few days this is what I’ve been eating for lunch with a nice cold glass of milk.  And, as an appetizer with a cold, frosty beer, this is killer.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a new recipe and it’s because we are headed into a boat sale that has been kind of stressful.  We have been eating out all the time, not wanting to take the time and effort to cook our own meals.  So now we are within a week of selling the boat and living on land and negotiating the sale of our boat with a paranoid buyer!  I’d go into details but it would only be depressing and I don’t want to relive it.  Let’s just say that we have a questionable settlement that I hope works for us and the inexperienced buyer. A synopsis is that he is buying the boat here in Dunedin and will be taking the boat across to Apalachicola FL within two weeks to ultimately moor the boat in Panama City, FL.  So he’ll be doing a shakedown cruise across 140 miles of the Gulf of Mexico, most of which is done at night, without knowing a whole lot about the boat and because of the way he has treated us through the whole transaction, I’m not about to bend over backwards to help him learn the stuff.  I’m ready to take the money and run!   On to the sandwich.

Now I’m thinking…do I need to post pictures of how to spread All Natural Peanut Butter on a piece of whole wheat bread and then spread mayonnaise, (actually I prefer Miracle Whip due to it’s sweetness), and add some dill pickle slices to the mix and eat like a regular sandwich?  And, if you want to make a cool appetizer of this, leave them as an open face version cut up into bite-size squares.  Well hell yes, because I’m going to eat the damn things when I get done with the photos!

I guess that this is an acquired taste because the First Mate doesn’t care much for it, but I’ve been eating this combination since 7th grade when a guy named Jerry had them every day for lunch.  Try it and tell me what you think.

Still on Paradise for a few days!

OK So I wondered if anyone outside my family — maternal side — liked peanut butter, mayo and ;pickle sandwiches. I love them. Just finished one. Everytime I mention it to someone outside the family, I get a “don’t make me puke” face from them. They don’t know what they’re missing! My take on the sandwich is a little different in that we make them with sweet gherkins. The sweet -sour taste of the gherkin combined with the mayo and pb is unbelievable. Try it. You’ll like it.

      Hi Janice,

I love these sandwiches and I will definitely give sweet gherkins a try. Thank you for the great comment.

Was directed here, when a friend thought I was a tad WEIRD, hearing about my LOVE for PB, Pickle sandwiches…
My FAVORITE, & LONGSTANDING BEST, is CRUNCHY ???? peanut butter, long slices of dill pickles, and Mayo.
But, just recently, (while suffering a bread “outrage”) I discovered the YUMMY IDEA of using a Tortilla !!!
AWESOME !! I did a “burrito” rolled style. Then, the next time, a soft taco style… Both gets a thumbs up ???? from me… ????

Well Joe I would fully agree with you as I have been enjoying Crunchy/creamy peanut butter and Del Monte sliced pickles with Best Foods Mayonnaise on wheat/rye bread since the 2nd grade as I am almost 72! My youngest son who is 34 says it is not healthy for me but I overrule his opinion as it is delicious in every respect and fills the munchies time of the day!

I KNEW “there had to be others out there”! My ENTIRE maternal side of out family and my Dad, GOES NUTS over peanut butter, pickle, mayonnaise sandwiches, and has as long as 60-70 years!! Our family calls it Idiot’s Delight. Best on white bread, although rye does have its moments…and smooth peanut butter, as crunchy seems to take over and be all about the peanuts. It is actually (if you follow culinary rule of thumb) the apex goal for “balance” and why delicious things taste delicious: a tad sweet, salty, with “an acid” to compliment (the vinegar in the pickles and also a touch in the mayonnaise) combined with “comfortable texture”. The classic texture goal is smooth, with fiem and with a bit of crunch. In the case of the Idiot’s Delight, the comfortable texture is part of the “yum”factor. Not a whole lot different than Chinese sweet and sour, or like some cole slaws that are slightly vinegar-tangy and slightly sweet and slightly salty. People are always SURPRISED they like it when I insist they try it. Fun to see this blog about it, but I am sadly out of peanut butter and dying for one now!

Hey Michelle. People don’t know what they’re missing. It sounds awful but you describe it perfectly. I actually fixed myself a peanut butter, pickle and mayo sandwich last night. It was a delicious treat. Thanks for the kudos and great comment.

PB & Mayo Sandwich is pretty good. Never tried it with pickles. Another combination I like is PB & Bologna Roll-up. You can add a pickle to this in the middle and roll it up.

I hadn’t tried them yet but I love peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. dill or sweet pickles, sometimes I put onions on them also. family thinks I’m nuts too but then they put bananas on peanut butter with mayo. can’t stand bananas so I think they are nuts. I prefer Miracle Whip myself but not on peanut butter. Now I’m hungry for a peanut butter and pickle sandwich and no peanut butter in the house.

I love it! Thanks Kim. My wife hates it. I’ll have to do another post with better photos to make the combination shine!
