Strawberry banana green smoothie time! I’m the one that does not eat green soup and would never drink a green drink. That is until now. Time for me to man up. I wasn’t too sure how I would like it, but strawberries and bananas together are really good. I figured that I could add some other good stuff to make the greens not taste so green, and that way I could get past the greenness. Does this make any sense? Let’s get to the meat of it.
Having never had a green smoothie, I am certainly not an expert on the subject. I had to research it a little bit. I hope you’re okay with that. Seems that you can put just about anything you’ve got into a blender and call it a green smoothie, assuming it turns out green. That would be the first indication that you did in fact, make a green smoothie. There has got to be something more to it than that though. If you put a bunch of spinach and kale in a blender with some water, you would end up with what you could call, that’s right, a green smoothie. Not a very tasty one. So in my research it seems that there is an ingredient ratio that should be followed to create a really good strawberry banana green smoothie. The ingredients I used fall into this ratio.
First green smoothie ingredient:
3 parts greens. I used a spinach, kale, arugula mix that we had left over. You know, one of those big bags of greens that contain way too much for two people to eat at any one time. One of those. For this smoothie recipe I used two good sized hand fulls, (and there is still some left over)!
Second green smoothie ingredient:
2 parts fruit and sweetener. You need to add some sweetness to cut the raw taste of the greens. That’s where the strawberries and banana come in. Both have a good amount of natural sweetness. And it just so happens that MaryJo froze a couple of ripe bananas and bought, cleaned and froze a bunch of strawberries. Next, for a little more sweetness is honey, or agave sweetener. I used honey, but agave would work too. Maple syrup might not be too bad either.
Third green smoothie ingredient:
1 or 2 parts nutrition. This is protein and healthy fats. I used non-fat Greek yogurt for protein and flax seed oil for omega-3 fat. You could also throw in 5 or 6 walnuts for some healthy fats. I happened to have the flax seed oil from GNC that I used to season my steel fry pan. For protein, I’ve also heard of using wheat germ.
So there is my synopsis of the research…preparation…and finally the end result, that as you can see was actually consumed, by someone who does not eat green stuff! “I kissed a girl and I liked it!” What more can I say? I hope you’ll make yourself a tasty strawberry banana green smoothie!
